Warfare
Warfare: the gritty realistic war movie that will leave you wishing you had seen a romantic comedy. This film excels at creating a sense of anxiety in the movie watcher, and makes the audience feel like they are in the midst of battle with the military personnel on screen. That being said, immediately afterwards I could’ve gone for a montage sequence of two people falling in love from any romcom ever. You know the cliché scene where a new couple is baking together playfully dabbing cake batter on each other’s noses, then the next second they’re holding hands at the county fair? I could’ve used that just as a palette cleanser.
I will say that this movie is very well made! The production value is high and the sound editing is absolutely outstanding! Additionally, the cast delivered great performances. Despite there being no “A-lister” celebrities in this film, at no time is there a “made for tv” feel to it.
That being said, I found this movie more frustrating than exhilarating because the entire mission is a cluster. We’ve seen other war movies about military missions gone awry, such as Blackhawk Down, but at least Blackhawk Down had that underlying message of “leave no man behind”. I’m not sure what the message was here. It felt like something bad was happening. Then it wasn’t happening. The end.
For the general audience, we’re giving this our “Wait for Streaming” rating. If you’re a particular fan of war films, go check it out on the big screen to appreciate the sound and visceral action with our thoughts in mind. You know, after reading this over I feel like this review lacked my usual nonsensical observations. Did war steal my sense of humor?? Time to break out my romantic comedy collection and see if I can laugh, or at a minimum, at least find love. Here I come, Early Hugh Grant!!
