Thunderbolts
We’ve all seen the classic tale of what happens when you assemble a team of bad guys to do the right thing: The Dirty Dozen, DC’s Suicide Squad, The Dirty Dozen Part II, James Gunn’s Suicide Squad, The Dirty Dozen Part III, Paw Patrol. Were there really that many Dirty Dozen films?? I guess Ernest Borgnine had to pay the rent somehow. Anyways, *Thunderbolts is Marvel’s turn at telling this classic tale of bad guys having to do some good.
Overall, I enjoyed this film. Florence Pugh is a great actress and fully captures what happens when a trained assassin is stuck in a rut (she literally goes on missions in sweat pants). There are also some really great laughs from David Harbour’s character, The Red Guardian. Most of all though, as a movie fan, I appreciate the use of practical effects. This film features stunt work by the lead actors, and real explosions on location. I love a real explosion…unless I’m standing next to it. In those cases, explosions suck.
Despite these positives, I still find myself longing for Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and Chris Evans as Captain America...still wanting that Marvel high I once knew. I did enjoy this film, but since Marvel has set such a high bar in the past, we’re giving this our “Wait for Streaming” rating. I mean, there’s so many superhero films at this point that even Ernest Borgnine would’ve turned some down.
