The Odyssey
Much like the time I had to get to the bathroom after three consecutive Big Gulps and hit every obstacle along the way, this film was also quite the odyssey. Sure I didn’t face off against any cyclopses…cyclopsis? Cyclopseese? I did, however, face off against an angry pack of parking lot birds, a wet floor sign and a grumpy gas station attendant who insisted that restrooms are for paying customers only. The point is, The Odyssey is a long treacherous journey and Christopher Nolan’s new film captures the agony of that journey in the epic fashion that we’ve come to expect from this detail oriented director.
Those not familiar with the tale may be caught by surprise by the supernatural and haunting sequences that our hero, Odysseus, encounters on his long grueling journey home from war. Also, with a 2 hour and 52 minute runtime viewers need to dig in for the long haul. That being said, the film features epic set pieces, superb cinematography and amazing performances by such a diverse cast so famous that you feel like you’re at George Clooney’s Christmas party. George Clooney isn’t in this, but you get the idea.
This is not a movie I see myself watching over and over again, but with the production value put into it, it’s worth seeing on the big screen. In fact, it’s the very first movie to be shot entirely in IMAX. Based on all these factors, we’re giving this our “Go to the Theater to See” rating. And at just under three hours, maybe lay off the Big Gulps. And if you do find yourself in a bathroom emergency afterwards, stay away from the 7-Eleven at 3rd and Main. You’ve got to buy something and the cashier only takes exact change.
