Supergirl

I love a strong female lead! That’s “lead” as in one who leads and not “lead” as in the dense metal that shields your genitals from radiation during a routine X-ray. Sorry I have to differentiate between the two, but the darn English language spells them both the same way. I don’t want you to think I’m talking about an element from the Periodic Table when I’m actually talking about the primary actress in a film. But enough about simple metals, instead let’s discuss the elements of this film.

Overall this film was entertaining, and there were several elements I enjoyed. Milly Alcock is a great actress and although not directed by James Gunn, since he took over as creative director of DC Studios, there is a new freshness brought to the DC films. On the other hand, this film had several plot points or ideas that felt like they were borrowed from other popular films. Supergirl was trying to rescue some enslaved brides kept by an evil race of beings, but this felt very much like the plot to Fury Road. Even the costuming of the brides appeared very similar. Set pieces resembled set pieces and sequences from the Guardians of the Galaxy films, and going on a butt kicking spree to save a dog had John Wick vibes. These are all great movies, but I don’t know if anything stood out as signature to this film. If another movie were to borrow something unique to this film, I don’t know what that something would be.

In conclusion, we’re giving this our Wait for Streaming rating. It might be fun to watch to keep up with the continuity of the new DC Studios films, but maybe not enough to hit the theater for at the moment if there’s something else you want to watch. And that’s “watch” as in to observe something with your vision and not “watch” as in a timepiece worn on your distal upper extremities. Darn English.
