Project Hail Mary
A “Hail Mary” is often used to describe a desperate move with low probability of success. This term could be used to describe me attempting a three point shot…or a lay-up, but here it refers to the latest major motion picture starring Ryan Gosling. The film is based off of the Andy Weir novel by the same name, and revolves around Gosling’s character waking up in space and having to save the Sun. That’s Sun, s-u-n, not s-o-n. Although, I’d 100% watch a movie where Gosling has to save his son in space. Can someone start writing that?
This is a beautiful film. It’s aesthetically pleasing, but the story itself is also quite beautiful. The movie tackles big life themes like friendship, sacrifice and what it means to be brave, all with a fair share of humor. And in addition to being a great story that was shot very cinematically, it’s paired with an excellent scoring by Daniel Pemberton. This movie is basically like a Hydrogen molecule that lost its electron…it’s all positives (sorry, this is a science based film, I had to include a joke for the scientific community that might actually tune in to this review for a change. And if you are one of those science professionals, please don’t write in and say something like “technically a hydrogen molecule is only positively charged if it hasn’t formed a covalent bond” or some other scientific nonsense like that. I know ok?!? Geez…I don’t need this right now! Neither does my inbox.)
In conclusion, we’re giving this our “Go to the Theater to See” rating. This is an epic story, that is a lot of fun, and worthy of the big screen. And if nothing else, if the science in this science fiction story turns out to be true…the sun will be gone in just 30 years, so get to the movies as much as possible!
