Captain America: Brave New World
You’re probably thinking, “You haven’t done a movie review since last year, how can we trust the journalistic integrity of such a sporadic reviewer?” That is a great question, & if you have an answer please be sure to let us know, as we’ve yet to hire a PR team. And we won’t be hiring one anytime soon. This year’s budget has already been spent on website fees, a refillable popcorn bucket & one of those oversized foam cowboy hats (I saw it at a yard sale & couldn’t help myself).
But enough about me trying to get free public relations advice, let’s talk Captain America. Pros: It’s nice to see a Marvel movie where the plot doesn’t come down to saving the planet in the third act. The stakes were lower here & that was appreciated. Other positives include the acting talents of Anthony Mackie & of course, Harrison Ford. However, the main attraction in this film is the appearance of Red Hulk. Can I just say how refreshing it was to see an angry hulk again?? The hulk Marvel has been giving us recently is an intelligent professor hulk that appreciates diner food and banter, which are great qualities, but not for a hulk. I like my hulks to be an insurance adjuster’s worst nightmare causing maximum property damage, full of uncontrollable rage so angry he could throw a school bus.
Now for the cons. I felt like I just wasn’t invested in the characters. These later Marvel movies keep introducing new people & the writers try to impress us with the unheard of character by giving them each a brief scene where they beat up a group of no name henchmen that out number them. We need different introductions and ways of making us care. Secondly, I couldn’t suspend my disbelief with the villain. He just came across as cheap in my mind & a little “made for tv”. And lastly, it was pretty green screen heavy. I know many movies are, but you shouldn’t be thinking about it while you’re watching it.
In conclusion, we’re giving this our “Wait for Streaming” rating. If you follow the Marvel movies, watch it at your convenience to keep up with the ever continuing story, but there’s no real need to rush to the theaters when you balance the pros and cons. LEGAL NOTE: A Movie Review Website does not condone or encourage the throwing of school buses.
